Wally Pipp was a star first baseman for 16 season in the Majors, primarily playing for the New York Yankees from 1915 to 1925. During his career, he led the AL in home runs in 1916 and 1917, and was a key member of the 1923 World Series champions team. Pipp is considered to be one of the best power hitters of the dead ball era, but is best remembered for losing his starting role to Lou Gehrig on June 2, 1925, which began Gehrig’s streak of 2,130 consecutive games played. This index card has been hand signed and inscribed “To my friend – Gerald Phillips – with every good wish” by “Wally” Pipp. The autograph has been authenticated, slabbed and graded a 9 by Beckett.
