Victor Pellot Power was the first Puerto Rican of African descent to play in the Major Leagues, and the second Puerto Rican to play in the American League. He started his minor league career with the Yankees in 1951, but he was never promoted. Many people believed it was a racially motived decision after general manager George Weiss said Pellot was “not the Yankee type”. In 1953, he was traded to the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics and later played with the Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins. His approach to fielding first base was influential to how first baseman field the ball today. During his career, he was a 6-time All-Star, 7-time Gold Glove Award winner, and was voted the Twins MVP in 1962. He is only one of six players, to have hit both a leadoff and walk-off home run in the same game, which he did in 1957. Pellot passed away in 2005 at the age of 78. This Rawlings official American League baseball was hand signed by Vic Power with his full name “Victor Pellot Power”. The autograph includes authentication from PSA/DNA.
