Verdell Mathis was the best left-handed pitcher in the Negro Leagues in the 1940s. He was known for his fastball and screwball, as well as having an excellent pickoff move. When he wasn't pitching, he also often played first base and outfield, and was known for being an excellent hitter. As a star for the Memphis Red Sox, he was selected to the the East-West All-Star roster 6-times. Mathis passed away in 1998 at the age of 83.
