Steve Palermo was a Major League Baseball umpire for the American League from 1977 to 1991. During his career, he umpired three American League Championship Series, and the 1983 World Series. He served as the third base umpire during the 1978 playoff game between the Yankees & Red Sox, signaling a "fair ball" for Bucky Dent's game-changing home run. Palermo was also one of the umpires who caught Joe Niekro in the act of scuffing the ball in a game in 1987. In 1991, The Sporting News ranked him as "Number 1" among AL umpires for overall performance. Palermo passed away in 2017 at the age of 67.
