In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the SMU football program was led by running backs Eric Dickerson and Craig James, along with quarterback Lance McIlhenny. This dominant backfield became known as the “Pony Express”. In 1982 the Mustangs posted an 11-0-1 record, were National Champions, and won the 1983 Cotton Bowl Classic against Pittsburgh and their star quarterback, Dan Marino.
