His father was Hall of Famer Eddie Collins, who is the only player in Major League history to have over 3,300 hits in less than 10,000 at-bats. Collins Jr. left the Athletics in 1942 to join the United States Navy, where his cruiser, the USS Miami, participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and supported strikes on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After returning from military service and retired as an active player, he joined the front office of the Phillies from 1947 to 1955. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 83.
