Lovill “Chubby” Dean was a left-handed pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics (1936-1941) and the Cleveland Indians (1941-1943). Dean was selected in the Athletics 1936 spring training to replace Jimmie Foxx at first base, but manager Connie Mack later decided he was better as a pitcher, and he really excelled as a pinch-hitter. He left baseball to serve in the military during World War II from 1943 to 1946. During that time, he was director of athletics for the Army at Fort Dix and for the European Command at Nuremberg, Germany. Dean passed away in 1970 at the age of 55. This vintage Spalding official Pro League baseball was hand signed and inscribed “Riverside NJ 1966” by Chubby Dean. The autograph includes authentication from PSA/DNA.
